Days after singer Zubeen Garg died in Singapore, Indian authorities arrested his manager, Siddhartha Sharma, and festival organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta. Mahanta was detained upon arrival from Singapore at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, while Sharma was picked up from a Gurugram apartment.

Both men were brought to Guwahati early Wednesday for questioning as investigators dig deeper into the circumstances of the celebrated Assamese singer’s passing.

SIT Takes Over Investigation

The Assam government has constituted a special ten-member SIT, led by Special DGP M P Gupta, to probe the case. Notices were served to Sharma, Mahanta, and members of the Singapore Assam Association, as well as others who attended the cultural festival in Singapore where Garg was scheduled to perform.

Authorities have stressed that every angle behind the Zubeen Garg death will be examined, with close cooperation between local and international agencies.

Public Outcry and Earlier Developments

Zubeen Garg’s death triggered an emotional wave in Assam and beyond. In Guwahati, angry fans clashed with police and vandalised Sharma’s residence, demanding accountability. Earlier, police had detained fellow musician Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, a longtime bandmate who accompanied Garg on the yacht trip during which he drowned.

Officers had also raided the homes of Sharma and Mahanta but failed to locate them until this week. This marks a major change in the ongoing investigation into Zubeen Garg's death.

Hope for Clarity and Closure

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had set an ultimatum for the duo to appear before authorities by October 6. He has promised a transparent inquiry, including postmortem reviews for additional clarity on Zubeen Garg’s death in Singapore.

While a Singapore hospital cited drowning as the cause of death, officials maintain that further findings are necessary. For grieving fans and family, the arrests raise expectations that unanswered questions about Garg’s final hours may finally move toward resolution.
