Big Changes in Team India: Gill Exits, Jasprit Bumrah Returns for Australia T20I Opener
In all three ODI matches India played against Australia, Shubman Gill opened the innings, but could manage to score only 10, 9, and 24 runs. This combined score in all three matches is the lowest among the runs scored by the top six Indian batters.
Apart from this, the Indian vice-captain’s performance in the Asia Cup 2025 was also quite poor, except for the Super Fours match against Pakistan, where he scored 47 off 28 balls. Will the Indian team management give him a temporary rest? Here’s all you need to know.
Opening Combination & Middle-Order Strategy
Rumours are that the Indian team management could possibly replace Shubman Gill with Sanju Samson as the opener against Australia on Wednesday. Samson’s batting performance has really been commendable last year. He smashed three centuries in 2024, two of which were scored in South Africa. However, as Gill joined in, he started playing in the middle order.
Other than Shubman Gill, the Indian cricket team captain, Suryakumar Yadav has also been in the spotlight, who failed to perform in the T20Is this year. He has been the third-highest run-scorer in the T20Is, and besides, his achievements in the IPL 2025 were also laudable. Suryakumar crossed the 25-run mark in all 16 matches he played for the Mumbai Indians, but scored only 100 runs in 12 matches for India.
Pace Power: Bumrah's Return and Attack Depth
Not to mention that Jasprit Bumrah is also present in the T20I squad, who was given a resting period in the ODI series. The fast bowler is set to lead the bowling attack in the upcoming matches along with Arshadeep Singh. Inclusion of Harshit Rana in the squad is also a possibility on account of Hardik Pandya’s absence.
Nitish Kumar Reddy is also a great bowler for Team India; however, his fitness is a matter of concern at the moment, as he went through a left quadriceps injury during the second ODI in Adelaide
India's predicted XI for the 1st T20I sees Shubman Gill out and Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh included. This replacement of the players is a strong, much-needed move for team India at present.
