Bumrah to Miss Oval Test as India Grapples With Injury Blow Before Series Finale

Jasprit Bumrah will miss the fifth and final Test between India and England, not because of a knee injury, as initially believed, but because of workload management. The decision to rest him was made on medical grounds as a precaution, rather than being part of any pre-planned workload rotation strategy.

Before the final series was accompanied, BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar had hinted that Bumrah would be playing in only three Test matches out of the five to remain fit, after what could be termed a long rehabilitation post-back surgery.

Thereafter, Bumrah played the first, third, and fourth Tests and was rested for the second. However, fresh reports have emerged pointing towards a minor knee problem flaring up before the fifth Test, such that the medical team intervened with a recommendation against his participation.

Bumrah's Absence Jolts India Before Series Decider

Though he missed the final game, Jasprit Bumrah was the major protagonist of the series. He grabbed 14 wickets, which included two instances of taking five wickets, in three matches. The Lord placed his name on the honours board after registering 5/74.

His bowling spells were torment for the England batting lineup, and he finished as India's joint highest wicket-taker along with Mohammed Siraj.

With Bumrah missing, India's bowling attack faces a serious setback on the eve of a crucial series decider at The Oval. With the series all square, his unavailability has thrown India's preparations completely off-kilter.

Akash Deep is likely to return to the side after recovering from a niggle in his groin that ruled him out of the fourth Test. Akash made waves during the third Test at Edgbaston with his 10-wicket match haul on debut.

The Indian team management could try out Arshdeep Singh, a slightly more controlling left-arm option, or even Kuldeep Yadav. However, he may not really appeal much with the conditions expected to be beneficial for seam bowling across The Oval.

As the channel's most experienced pacer, Mr. Siraj is expected to lead the attack alongside Shardul Thakur or Prasidh Krishna; the decision ultimately hinged on the pitch assessment.

Can India Cope Without Bumrah in Decider?

This unfortunate injury changed the narrative on Bumrah's absence from strategic rest to a matter of concern regarding long-term fitness. With a busy calendar ahead, including the Champions Trophy and the Test series against Australia, the BCCI is not ready to take any chances with one of its most valuable assets.

With their pace spearhead out of the fifth Test, things have become uphill for India. England will regard Bumrah's absence as a timely advantage on a surface that could be pleasant to the bowlers, coincidentally wishing to gain their first series win over India since 2018.
