Sushant Singh Rajput Case Reignites As Court Seeks Rhea Chakraborty’s Reply on CBI Closure Report

5 years later, Rajput’s death has kept the country engaged in a legal battle. In a new twist, a Mumbai court has ordered Actress Rhea Chakraborty to respond to the CBI’s closure report. The CBI closure report concluded Rajput’s death was a ‘‘simple case of suicide’’ and sparked public discussions that had disappeared from mainstream media surrounding one of India’s most high-profile celebrity cases.

The case included countless allegations, conspiracy theories, and media trials. Will this be the end of the public spectacle, or will the court initiate a newly minted investigation?

Court Seeks Response On CBI Closure Report

On July 29, 2025, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate R.D.Chavan issued a notice to Rhea Chakraborty, asking for her response to the closure report of the CBI filed in March 2025. The report was filed after an exhaustive five-year investigation concluded that no one, Rhea, her family, or Rajput's sisters included should face any criminal charges. 

The court is only following the procedure to allow the original informant, who imposed the countercomplaint against Rajput's sisters (Rhea), to respond to the closure report. The next hearing in court being set for August 12, shall be the date on which the closure report may be accepted or further investigation be asked for by the court. 

Societal Issues According to the Sushant Singh Rajput Case 

It was instituted on June 14, 2020, in Rajput and had so-called audience fury that made fans and politicians demand a CBI inquiry into the unknown circumstances.

The major flashpoints include: 

  • Two FIRs: On the one hand, Rajput's father accused Rhea of having a role in his suicide and several financial crimes, while on the other hand, Rhea alleged that Rajput's sisters illegally purchased drugs for Rajput.
  • Forensic clarity: Experts at AIIMS found no evidence of poisoning or strangulation; hence, there was no inconsistency in the alleged theory of death, and the experts followed only the theory of suicide.
  • Media circus: Rhea was arrested in a drug case linked to Rajput's death, and then the media went into a frenzy. Eventually, she was granted bail.

What’s at Stake Now? 

  • Closure of the case: In case the court accepts the CBI report, the matter officially ends. 
  • Reinvestigation: The court may order a fresh probe in case the findings are challenged by either Rhea or Rajput’s Family. 
  • Public Scrutiny: The disputes remain a polarizing subject, with a social media campaign such as #JUSTICEForSSR is still active, cutting across legal conclusions. 

Satish Maneshinde, Rhea’s counsel, welcomed the findings, adding that ‘‘false narratives’’ created by social media were unjust. Meanwhile, the Rajput family has yet to put forth any public statement on the latest development.
