Sonam surrenders in UP after husband’s murder in Meghalaya honeymoon turns into crime shocker
The high-profile Meghalaya missing Indore couple’s case on Monday turned dramatic when Sonam, 24, surrendered to Uttar Pradesh Police. Her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, 30, was discovered dead on June 2 in a deep gorge near Cherrapunji. The couple disappeared on May 23 while on their honeymoon in Meghalaya.
Honeymoon Turns to Homicide
Police sources say that Sonam hired contract killers to kill her husband. The couple had married on May 11 in Indore and had come to Meghalaya for their honeymoon. They had been missing days after starting their trip.
Seven days later, the decomposed body of Raja, whose throat was slit and valuables stolen, was found underneath the Weisawdong Parking Lot in East Khasi Hills. A machete suspected to be the murder weapon was also recovered by police.
Police Crack Case Across Three States
The conspiracy for the murder is said to have been spread over three states, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Meghalaya. Based on leads, police detained three men from Indore, Aakash Rajpoot, Vikas alias Vicky, and Anand, and one from UP, Raj Kushwaha, who was supposed to be Sonam’s lover.
The Meghalaya Police, who established a Special Investigation Team (SIT), stated that Sonam was in constant contact with Kushwaha, and the conspiracy was formulated in Indore.
Sonam Found ‘Disturbed’ at Ghazipur Dhaba
Sonam was discovered in a disturbed state at a dhaba along the Varanasi-Ghazipur highway. Sahil Yadav, who runs the dhaba, said she seemed to be mentally disturbed and had told him that her husband was murdered during a robbery. She was called by her family after that, and they informed the police. She was then brought to the Ghazipur Medical College before surrendering.
Family Denies Charges, Seeks CBI Probe
Sonam’s father, Devi Singh, rejected the allegations of murder, accusing the Meghalaya Police of misleading the case. He stated that Sonam informed him that she was kidnapped and did not remember how she ended up in UP.
The Raghuvanshi family, which had accused Meghalaya authorities of inaction at first, has now accepted the breakthrough. “Only Sonam can explain her role,” said Raja’s brother Vipin.
Meghalaya CM Hails Police Efforts
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma welcomed the state police’s prompt action. “In 7 days, a big breakthrough has been made,” he tweeted on X. Minister Alexander Laloo Hek also deplored the previous attempts to tarnish the reputation of the state and the people.
Police indicate that another suspect is still on the run, and the investigation is still being pursued.
