On Wednesday, the PIB Fact Check officials spotted a deepfake video of President Droupadi Murmu in which she appears making false claims about Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The fact-checking authority has identified the video as AI-generated and suggested that Pakistani propaganda accounts are responsible for circulating misinformation. In the fake video, President Murmu asserts that she was being coerced by the government to promote Rafale fighter jets.

Claims of Blackmail and Propaganda Origin

The AI-generated video involves a fake voice of President Droupadi Murmu falsely claiming that she was “blackmailed” by the Modi government to take part in promotions related to Rafale jets.

Additionally, the AI-manipulated video mentions the President saying, “I want to request the citizens of our country that Modi Ji's Hindutva government blackmailed me and ordered me to sit in Rafale... If anything happens to me, Modi Ji and his Hindutva politics will be responsible.”

In response to the widespread circulation of this fake video, PIB Fact Check, in a recent post on X (previously Twitter), shared that “Pakistani propaganda accounts are circulating a digitally altered video of President Droupadi Murmu with false claims that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is using her as a prop to elevate Rafale PR.” The PIB body further stated, “The President of India has NOT made any such statement.”

PIB's Warning on Digital Manipulation and Reporting

In addition to proving that the statements made by the Indian President were AI-generated and false, the PIB Fact Check authority has warned people not to trust and share any such videos without confirming. It has also asked people to immediately report such false content through the WhatsApp number, +91 8799711259, or email at [email protected].

The Fact Check unit has also offered simple advice on confirming the originality of any video. Citizens should look for signs, including distorted lip movements, shifting backgrounds, fake logos, and mismatched voice synchronization to identify fake videos. The PIB  body also informed that all the Indian government websites always end with “.gov.in.” and that citizens should not trust any other website claiming to be a government website.

The PIB Fact Check flagged a deepfake video of President Murmu spread by Pakistani propaganda accounts with false claims. The AI-manipulated clip, which claimed that she was being "blackmailed" over a Rafale PR stunt by PM Modi, was confirmed to be AI-generated.
