The authorities declared the incident a hoax. A formal investigation is underway to trace the email's origin and sender.

Understanding the Pattern of Hoax Threat Emails in Bengaluru

Hoax bomb threat emails have become a recurring issue in Bengaluru, and they basically target various institutions like schools, airports, and malls. The Central Crime Branch (CCB) usually performs these investigations and frequently holds discussions with other intelligence units for new insights. Investigators note a pattern in the methods used by the senders.

The accused often employs a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to mask their digital identity. They make use of short-term or offshore email platforms that delete user data. For example, some emails were traced back to the offshore platform AtomicMail.io. This service deletes sender details within a mere seven days. The use of such services complicates the process of tracking the email's true origin.

Authorities must often seek assistance from international bodies. A key observation is that threats are sometimes linked to personal vendettas. For example, a techie was arrested for sending hoax emails to schools to frame a former male friend.

The message, sent under the name “Mohit Kumar,” led the police to file an FIR under Section 173 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, according to ANI.
