Pakistan Jail Quells Speculation Over Imran Khan's Health and Location Amid Social Media Claims
On Wednesday, Adiala Jail administration confirmed that the former prime minister of Pakistan Imran Khan is alive and in good health. This confirmation follows recent death rumours on social media.
In addition, leaders from Imran Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) also demanded an official statement from the government regarding his health condition. They also urged the authorities to arrange a meeting between Imran and his family.
Jail Administration Rejects Health and Transfer Claims
Adiala Jail administration has dismissed rumors about former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan. The prison officials firmly rejected speculation surrounding his health condition. They also stressed that claims about any potential transfer from the facility were untrue. Rawalpindi prison officials released a statement quoted by Geo News. They affirmed that there is no truth to reports about his transfer from Adiala jail.
Furthermore, they clarified that the former premier is "fully healthy and receiving complete medical attention." The officials labeled the speculation about the PTI founder's health as "baseless." They emphasized that his well-being is being continuously ensured within the jail. Khan has been incarcerated since August 2023 and faces multiple serious cases, including charges of corruption and terrorism.
Rumours Intensify Amid Restricted Family Visits and Protests
Wild claims concerning Imran Khan's condition have circulated widely on social media. The rumours gained speed following a controversy involving his three sisters. They had demanded an impartial probe into a "brutal" police assault. The alleged assault occurred outside Adiala Jail last week.
The PTI news agency quoted Noreen Niazi, Imran Khan’s sister, saying, “We peacefully protested over concerns of his health condition. We neither blocked roads nor obstructed public movement, nor engaged in any unlawful conduct.” Further adding, “Yet, without warning or provocation, the streetlights in the area were abruptly switched off, deliberately casting the scene into darkness. What followed was a brutal and orchestrated assault by Punjab police personnel.”
Niazi also alleged “At the age of 71, I was seized by my hair, thrown violently to the ground, and dragged across the road, sustaining visible injuries.”
Apart from this, PTI urged authorities to facilitate an immediate meeting with his family. Social media handles, including foreign accounts, amplified unconfirmed reports; some of these reports alleged that Imran Khan has been killed in the jail. These unverified claims intensified fears and public anxiety.
