The Delay in Announcing the Schedule is Linked to Venue Availability and Logistical Issues in some States for Elections

The schedule announcement for IPL 2026 has reportedly been delayed, prompting the BCCI to consider a two-phase rollout of fixtures. The move is expected to help manage logistical planning while allowing teams and stakeholders to prepare for the upcoming season.

The BCCI had earlier informed franchises that the tournament would start on March 26. The start date and final date were later pushed back by two days.

When will the IPL 2026 Schedule be Released?

The schedule for IPL 2026 is expected to be announced on Monday, March 9, 2026. Fans and broadcasters will get an initial chunk of fixtures, with early matches announced first and the remainder held for later. Star Sports has earlier confirmed that the season will begin on March 28, with defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru hosting the opener at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Star Sports’ TV schedules list the fixtures revealed on Monday, March 9, at either 4:00 PM IST or 6:00 PM IST.

Reasons behind the Delay

The state assembly elections in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry complicate full scheduling. The Election Commission’s ongoing finalization of polling dates is a key constraint preventing the BCCI from locking an 84-match calendar now.

The BCCI Secretary, Devajit Saikia, has earlier stated that: "Please wait for two to three days for the IPL schedule. We will release it as soon as possible. We know that it is getting late because elections are being held in three or four states, such as Assam, Bengal and Tamil Nadu."

"We are waiting for the announcement from the election authorities. We have to take a call in a day or two. After that, we will inform you how we are going forward with the IPL," said Saikia in an interview.

Trouble for RCB Home Ground

Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) should meet 17 recommendations before M. Chinnaswamy clearance, as venue clarity remains unresolved. The KSCA has announced plans for five home matches in Bengaluru and two in Raipur, but cabinet clearance is conditional. The strict rule was implemented following the stampede on June 4, 2025, which resulted in 11 deaths.

Closing Note

The phased approach narrows immediate planning for teams and broadcasters to the first block of fixtures and the March 28 opener, leaving travel, ticketing, and secondary-venue allocations dependent on the later release of the remaining schedule.

If the Election Commission finalizes polling dates sooner, the BCCI could accelerate the release of the remaining matches within days after that confirmation. The board also requires a "rebranding window" to transition the vibe from the recently concluded ICC World Cup to IPL.
