Former Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, who announced his retirement from T20 cricket in June 2024, has shocked everyone with his comeback to the format. It is reported that he has expressed willingness to play in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT), India's premier domestic T20 tournament managed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India. SMAT intends to promote T20 cricket at the grassroots level and serve as an audition platform for the IPL auction.

Domestic Return Driven by BCCI Mandate

India has a gap in their ODI schedule following the South Africa series until 11 January against New Zealand. This break may have encouraged Rohit to consider playing SMAT, which is scheduled in Indore from 12 December to 18 December.

The BCCI has also mandated that all players must play domestic cricket when not on national duty. Many believe that BCCI pressured Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to play in the tournament. However, the board clarified that the veterans are playing by choice. Rohit will also very likely play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy starting on 24 December.

Implications for Mumbai's T20 Trophy Hopes

Mumbai has displayed strong form in the league stage of the tournament. They won all four matches of Elite Group A, topping the table with 16 points. As a result, Mumbai is set to reach the knockout stage. Additionally, Rohit Sharma's inclusion will be a major boost for the squad.

A source in the Mumbai Cricket Association stated, "Rohit has expressed his desire to play for Mumbai in the knockouts of SMAT." His presence adds immense experience to the team's batting lineup. He last played in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in the 2011/12 season, marking nearly an 18-year gap.

As far as performance is concerned, Rohit has been in excellent form since returning to international cricket. He scored a century and a fifty in Australia, and another fifty against South Africa. His presence can largely impact Mumbai's pursuit of the T20 trophy.
