Kane Williamson is all set to make his comeback to the IPL in the upcoming season. But he won't be returning as a player; rather, the star batter will debut as a Strategic advisor for Lucknow SuperGiants (LSG) in 2026.

With teams bringing experience to their on-field and off-field set-up, LSG plans to strengthen its squad with multiple changes for the upcoming season.

Kane Williamson’s Appointment

Hinting at key changes, LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka said: "Kane’s strategic thinking and leadership played a pivotal role in New Zealand’s performances in the World Cup and Champions Trophy. He has had an impeccable record as an individual, as a human being and as a captain."

"I have always been impressed by his leadership qualities, calm demeanour and his ability to inspire players. After I had a meeting with him in London, Kane and head coach Justin Langer met and then Kane and Rishabh Pant had a long discussion. Then we all came to the conclusion that this is a very good choice," he added.

Reacting to the new role, the Kiwi legend said: "I'm really excited to be joining LSG. They have a hugely talented squad and a great group of coaches which I'm looking forward to working alongside. It's always special being involved in the IPL, the best franchise competition in the game."

The Lucknow-based team would look to improve on its seventh-place finish in the last IPL.

Changes in Coaching Staff

LSG has made several changes in its backroom staff. Former England star Carl Crowe joined the franchise as the new spin-bowling coach. He was previously associated with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Replacing Zaheer Khan, the team has appointed former KKR associate Bharat Arun as bowling coach. However, Justin Langer will continue as the head coach of the franchise.

Renewed Franchise

Head coach Justin Langer, being optimistic about changes, said: "We enter every IPL season full of hope and expectation - 2026 is no exception and we are excited about the work we have ahead of us as we continue building a franchise into one the Goenka family, our players, sponsors, supporters and fans are all immensely proud of. The work hasn't stopped since the end of last season as we prepare to make our mark on this season's IPL. The hope, expectation and passion for LSG is growing strongly. We are looking forward to strengthening our squad in the coming months. And, we look forward to seeing Ekana bathed in blue when the season kicks off."

Kane’s Latest Appearances in Professional Cricket

Williamson last played for New Zealand in the Champions Trophy final against India in March this year. He will miss the upcoming T20I series at home against England, but is targeting a comeback in the ODIs that follow. The first of those 50-over matches takes place at his hometown in Tauranga on October 26.

In IPL, he played his last match as a player in 2024 for the Gujarat Titans. In his two appearances, he scored 27 runs in 27 balls. Unfortunately, the WTC-winning captain for New Zealand went unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction.

While the legendary batter has not retired from international cricket yet, this new role has surprised cricket fans and analysts. He has opted for a casual contract with New Zealand Cricket, which means his appearances are likely to be sporadic as a player in the black jersey.
