From Prince to King: Shubman Gill Breaks Tendulkar and Kohli's Records at Edgbaston
In a defining moment for Indian cricket, Shubman Gill smashes long-standing records of Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli in the fourth Test at Edgbaston against England.
The 25-year-old batting prodigy, once hailed as the ‘Prince of Indian cricket’ is fast establishing himself as the new king of Indian cricket.
Gill scored a stunning 213, the major contribution by India on a clot of jewel among Test matches that could cross the finish line for the series.
The innings was graceful and marked by patience. It carried a sense of authority from the very start. Gill’s hunger for runs mirrored Kohli’s intensity, while his technique echoed the timeless class of Tendulkar.
Yet, it was all delivered with a modern aura that made the knock uniquely his own. His double hundred did not just rescue India's overall; it wiped the record books clean.
Surpassing Icons: A New Chapter Begins
With the double hundred, Shubman Gill became the youngest Indian to score two Test double-hundreds, surpassing the synonymous Tendulkar, who did so in 2004 against Bangladesh. Gill is now also India’s fastest to 3,000 Test runs, this time in 55 innings, smashing Virat Kohli’s earlier record of 63.
In some respects, it was the stark domination of the driest of English bowling attacks by Gill that was another feather in his cap. Facing James Anderson, Ollie Robinson, and Jofra Archer with a silvery grey sky overhead, Gill was technically strong yet fearless in his choice of shots.
His innings was studded with 28 boundaries and 2 sixes, one of which he sent high over long-on in true Virender Sehwag style, eliciting a standing ovation from the Edgbaston crowd.
From Promise to Phenomenon
From the 2018 U19 World Cup onwards, he has borne the weight of expectations. But in recent years, he has morphed from being just a promising cricketer to one who wins matches across formats almost regularly.
He has already made headlines in the IPL, ODI World Cup, and now in Test cricket, as such, for a very few, he has truly become a classic all-format star of the new-age Indian cricket.
This recently-acquired aura was beautifully toasted by ex-captain Virat Kohli, who tweeted, "Records are meant to be broken. Proud of you Champ. Keep going strong.”
Series Outlook
Gill’s brilliance has brought about a strong batting performance for India, and now the team finds itself holding a commanding position in the series. With just one Test remaining, India is hoping to win its first away series in England since 2007.
An Oncoming Era
As the careers of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli approach sunsets, the rise of Gill serves as an indicator for a smooth transition into the new era. Keeping calm under pressure, being flexible in adaptability, and hungry for big runs, Shubman Gill is not just filling the shoes but is making a path for himself.
And as his name was chanted from the historic Long Room in Edgbaston, one thing was for sure: the prince had truly become the king.
