Shubman Gill, one of the rising stars in Indian cricket, is very much expected to get a major upgrade in the coming Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) central contract cycle, according to various credible reports. Promotion to the A+ category, the highest pay grade under BCCI's annual retainership system, is now expected for the 25-year-old when the board firmed up contracts later this month.

Shubman Gill Set For Top BCCI Contract

BCCI's Annual General Meeting (AGM) is scheduled for December 22, 2025, at which the apex council will make key decisions on player retainerships for the 2025–26 cycle.

Central to the discussions are the contract statuses of veterans Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, both current A+ contract holders, whose roles have evolved since they stepped away from the Test and T20 formats.

Shubman Gill, currently an A‑grade central contract holder, is likely to be promoted to the elite A+ bracket, alongside the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja, if reports are anything to go by. That will increase his annual retainer from Rs. 5 crore to Rs. 7 crore, bringing him to a level, financially at least, with India's biggest names.

Gill Shines As Kohli, Rohit Face Scrutiny

The discussions come amidst a phase of transition at the helm in Indian cricket. Gill has already been given ample responsibility: he is captain of India’s Test and ODI teams and vice‑captain of the T20I outfit.

His growing reputation as an astute tactician and consistent performances across formats have bolstered his case for the top contract tier with the board. By contrast, Kohli and Rohit are said to be under scrutiny for their retention at the A+ grade.

Since both now play only in ODIs, having exited Test and T20I cricket, there’s reportedly some fresh debate over whether to retain them on their existing contracts. Some outlets say that they could go down one grade to A, resulting in a salary decrease of about INR 2 crore a year.

Will Shubman Gill Lead India’s Future?

The annual central contract structure, which categorizes players into one of four tiers: A+, A, B, and C, dictates not just retainers but also match fees, bonuses, and other benefits. A+ is retained as the most lucrative category, afforded only to the most effective and performing cricketers on the international stage.

All eyes will be on the BCCI's decisions as the AGM draws close, decisions expected to reflect the evolving hierarchy of Indian cricket, one in which Shubman Gill is expected to play an even bigger role.
