Tharoor Raises Linguistic Concerns After Kerala Name Change Approval
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has criticised the Centre after the Union Cabinet approved the proposal to rename Kerala as “Keralam.” He said the decision prioritises symbolism over development. “The government has not given us an AIIMS or any new institutions. They have given us no projects in the Union Budget,” he remarked.
‘Keralam’ Already Exists in Malayalam
Tharoor pointed out that Kerala is already referred to as “Keralam” in Malayalam. “It has already been ‘Keralam’ in Malayalam. So now, a Malayalam word is coming into English. I don't know what difference it makes,” he said. He questioned the practical impact of the move, especially when key infrastructure demands remain unmet.
Linguistic Concerns Raised on Social Media
In a separate post on X, Tharoor raised what he called a “small linguistic question” about the terms used for residents. He asked what would happen to “Keralite” or “Keralan” if the state becomes Keralam. He quipped that “Keralamite” sounds like a microbe and “Keralamian” like a rare earth mineral, highlighting possible confusion.
State Government’s Push for Historical Identity
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had earlier moved a resolution in the state assembly seeking the name change. He argued that the demand for a united Kerala for Malayalam-speaking communities dates back to the freedom struggle. The resolution has already been passed by the assembly and forwarded to the Centre.
Political Timing and Larger Implications
The Union Cabinet approved the plan, under which the Kerala assembly elections will occur before May. Compared to previous name changes in other states, the move has sparked debate over priorities.
Supporters of the movement describe it as a cultural correction, but Shashi Tharoor and others believe development needs to take first priority. The issue may shape political narratives in the coming election season.
