In a historic move that signals the end of an era in Bihar politics, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is set to file his nomination for a Rajya Sabha seat this Thursday. After serving ten terms at the helm of the state, Kumar's transition to the national parliament marks a shift for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

The Union Home Minister Amit Shah is arriving in Patna to oversee the process. Now, the focus has shifted to who will succeed ‘Vikas Purush’ as the first-ever BJP Chief Minister in Bihar’s history.

The End of an Era for "Sushashan Babu"

The big change started behind closed doors at the Chief Minister’s house. Nitish Kumar decided to move to the Upper House after a big election win in 2025. Also, the BJP became the largest party in that race, which makes it a strategic plan for the future.

According to The Hindu: “At a meeting of their party with JD(U) leaders held after the results of Assembly election in Bihar, a suggestion was made that a succession plan for the government be made within a year of the results.”

The report also added that, “It was conveyed that a succession plan for the government needed to be in place factoring in the future of the JD(U).”

Party members are feeling emotional about the news, but the leaders say this is a ‘smooth transition.’ They want the new leaders to get settled before the 2029 elections.

Who Will Be the Next Bihar CM and What Is the Succession Plan?

The Rajya Sabha seat news is now official, but the most important question is who will be the next Chief Minister. Sources say the BJP is choosing between two main leaders: Samrat Choudhary and Nityanand Rai.

Also, Nitish Kumar’s son, Nishant Kumar, is entering politics, as reported by Hindustan Times. This plan keeps the JD(U) involved in the government and ensures that its core supporters feel safe. By making Nishant a Deputy CM, the alliance stays strong.

The next six months will be a crucial period for new leaders as they need to manage a team where both parties have a lot of say. If the BJP can lead well while keeping JD(U) supporters happy, they will likely stay in power for a long time.
