The United States and India have finally decided to address the ongoing trade disputes. The American Chief Negotiator, Brendan Lynch, plans to visit New Delhi tonight. The India-US trade talks will resume on 16 September 2025. The Indian Chief Negotiator, Rajesh Agrawal, said that both countries aim to “fast-track” the talks.

The US Team Visit was Postponed in the Past

The US Chief Negotiator’s visit today is not the first planned visit intended to ease the tension between India and the US trade. A US team for the sixth round of talks on the bilateral trade agreement (BTA) was postponed earlier due to escalating remarks from the Trump administration.

This agreement aims to increase bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030, which is more than twice the ongoing trade at $191 billion. The BTA was decided after the US imposed a heavy 50% tariff on India. Out of this 50%, 25% tariffs are levied on Indian goods to fund the war in Ukraine by purchasing Russian crude oil, according to Donald Trump.

In addition, the US demanded reduced tariffs on corn, apples, almonds, soybeans, and ethanol. However, India did not agree to this as it would affect the livelihood of poor and marginal farmers.

Trade Barriers Between India & the US to be Addressed

In the past week, US President Donald Trump shared a post saying, “Looks like we’ve lost India and Russia to the deepest, darkest, China.” He shared it after Prime Minister Modi met Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin at the SCO summit in Tianjin. Furthermore, he urged European countries to impose tariffs of up to 100% on imports from China and India.

However, the situation is changing now. Trump recently said, “I am pleased to announce that India and the United States are continuing negotiations to address the trade barriers between our two nations.”

He also said, “I look forward to speaking with my very good friend, Prime Minister Modi, in the upcoming weeks. I feel certain that there will be no difficulty in coming to a successful conclusion for both of our great countries.”

As a result, the US Chief Negotiator, Brendan Lynch, is visiting New Delhi today to resume the previously postponed bilateral trade talks with India. This new agreement intends to take the current bilateral trade of $191 billion to $500 billion by 2030.
