An affidavit was submitted to the Delhi High Court by the terror convict and the commander-in-chief of the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Force in the past, Yasin Malik. In this affidavit, the Kashmiri separatist said he had the opportunity to meet the former Prime Minister of India, late Manmohan Singh, and claimed that the Ex-PM thanked him for meeting Hafiz Saeed.

Who is Yasin Malik?

Yasin Malik is a former militant and a Kashmiri separatist who wanted the separation of Kashmir from both India and Pakistan. He is the chairman of the Kashmir Liberation Front and has led an armed militancy in the Kashmir valley in the past. However, Malik renounced violence in 1994 and adhered to peaceful measures to resolve the conflict in Kashmir.

What Did the Former PM, Manmohan Singh, Say?

Yasin Malik said that Singh invited him to a meeting in 2006 to discuss the issue in Kashmir. He said, “In February 2006, I was invited by PM Manmohan Singh in New Delhi for a formal dialogue ... During the meeting, the Indian premier told me that India was trying hard to resolve the Kashmir issue.” He also mentioned Singh’s resolve to address the issue.

The terror convict also claimed in the affidavit that he met Hafiz Saeed at the behest of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and shared that the late PM thanked him. Malik said, “He conveyed his gratitude to me for my efforts, time, patience, and dedication. But as luck would have it, this meeting of mine with Hafiz Saeed and other militant leaders of Pakistan, which was initiated and executed only on the request of special director IB VK Joshi, was portrayed in a different context against me.”

Yasin Malik’s Interaction with Ex-PM Atal Behari Vajpayee

Yasin Malik also mentioned that he met the former prime minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, regarding the same Kashmir conflict in 1995, where he questioned the PM about the killings committed by the armed forces. The former PM’s response, “Yasin ji, kaache dhaage kaa hee sahi, hamare saath koi naa koi rishta zaroor rakhen,” disarmed Malik.

However, the court ordered the death penalty for Yasin Malik on August 11 for a terror funding case. The government has announced that some of Malik’s activities have caused harm to the nation. As a result, he was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2022.
