Delhi High Court Questions Rajpal Yadav Over Cheque Bounce Dues and Delays Bail
The Delhi High Court heard Rajpal Yadav’s bail plea on Thursday in the cheque bounce case and adjourned the matter to Monday. Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma remarked, “You have gone to jail because you didn’t honour your own commitment,” as proceedings began. The court noted repeated assurances by Rajpal that repayment would be made, without any follow-through.
Counsel Seeks Time, Bail Plea Filed
During the hearing, Rajpal Yadav’s counsel said efforts to reach the actor during lunch failed and informed the court that a bail application had been filed. The court recalled earlier submissions that money would be deposited the same day. “I tried contacting him, but wasn’t able to. I have filed a bail application,” the counsel told the bench, seeking time until Monday.
High Court Directs Reply From Complainant
Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma directed the complainant to file a reply to the bail application and flagged the case history. The court said the earlier order had been challenged before the Supreme Court without relief. Bar and Bench reported the judge told the complainant, “You need to file a reply… there were so many things we didn’t even know,” before listing the matter for Monday.
Background of the Cheque Bounce Case
Rajpal Yadav borrowed Rs. 5 crore in 2010 from Murali Projects Pvt Ltd to fund the film Ata Pata Laapata. After the film underperformed, repayment stalled. Several cheques bounced, triggering proceedings under the Negotiable Instruments Act. The outstanding amount stands at Rs 2 crore, according to court records referenced during hearings.
Conclusion: Accountability and Industry Response
Cheque bounce cases involving public figures often draw scrutiny due to repeated adjournments and unfulfilled undertakings. The High Court's strict approach to cases demonstrates its previous rulings, which required parties to comply with legal obligations before obtaining any relief.
The industry networks will assist with financial arrangements, while the legal responsibility aspect remains the primary focus. The upcoming hearing will decide if Rajpal Yadav’s bail proceedings will continue based on evidence of his payment and compliance with court orders.
