Pope Leon XIV Addresses World with Message of Unity and Compassion

The conclave, which took place in the Sistine Chapel, began on May 6th and ended this morning following a number of rounds of voting. White smoke poured out of the chimney on the chapel, indicating the successful election and causing waves of excitement to sweep through the crowds in St. Peter's Square. The official declaration, "Habemus Papam" ("We have a Pope"), was made by the Cardinal Protodeacon, Jean-Pierre Kutwa, before the new pontiff was unveiled.

Pope Leon XIV emerged onto the middle balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, his first time providing "Urbi et Orbi" (to the city and to the world) blessings. His address, in a variety of languages, addressed unity, mercy, and renewed allegiance to the teachings of Jesus Christ.

He noted that the world is confronted by hardships, including poverty, strife, and environmental problems, and appealed for a collective response in conquering these problems through faith and wisdom.

Robert Francis Prevost was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1955. He entered the Order of Saint Augustine and was ordained a priest in 1982. His service within the Augustinian order included serving in various leadership positions, among them Prior Provincial of the Augustinians' Chicago Province and subsequently as Prior General of the global order from 2001 to 2013.

His time as Prior General was characterized by attempts to make Augustinian communities more collaborative on a global scale and an emphasis on social justice projects.

Following a Legacy: Pope Leon XIV to Address Modern Issues with Gospel Values

Pope Francis appointed him in 2015 Bishop of Chiclayo, Peru, a diocese beset with serious social and economic problems. His ministry in Chiclayo was characterized by his dedication to the poor, his advocacy for human rights, and his anti-corruption efforts and advocacy for good governance.

His humble pastoral manner, characterized by authentic people-person relationships, earned him widespread admiration and respect in Peru.

The papal election of Pope Leon XIV is regarded as a watershed moment for the Catholic Church since he brings along immense experience, especially in Latin America, to the papacy. His religious experience and first-hand exposure to the Third World will characterize his pontificate.

Experts expect Pope Leon XIV to carry on his predecessor's emphasis on social justice and poverty, as well as stress unity and mission building for the Church throughout the globe. His consciousness of the Latin American Church, which contains a high percentage of the world's Catholics, will also shape his priorities.

Pope Leon XIV will be following in the footsteps of his predecessor by using the Gospel to tackle modern social and economic challenges. The installation of the Pope and his priorities for the Church will take place in the weeks ahead.

The world looks toward this new chapter in the history of the Catholic Church, led by a Pope with a diverse background. His early words and actions already suggested a pontificate of unity, charity, and commitment to answering the urgent needs of mankind.
