In a major breakthrough, Indian Air Force (IAF) Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh has officially confirmed that in Operation Sindoor in May 2025, India shot down five Pakistani fighter aircraft. They include F-16 and JF-17 variants, as well as a large airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft. The operation was a turning point in the latest military tensions between the two nuclear powers.

IAF Strikes Pakistan After Terror Attack

The IAF shot down these planes using its high-tech S-400 anti-aircraft missile system. Singh described it as being the farthest-ever recorded kill by a surface-to-air missile, with the AEW&C plane being downed at a distance of 300 kilometers.

The destruction of these aircraft severely lessened Pakistan's capabilities with respect to air surveillance and combat operations.

These air strikes were launched in response to a terrorist strike in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, in which 26 lives were lost. India's swift surgical strike attempted to destabilize Pakistan's defensive infrastructure and to prevent further cross-border terrorism.

Apart from the aerial attacks, the IAF also bombarded key military infrastructure such as airbases and radar installations, thereby hammering down Pakistan's operational preparedness.

Global Concern Over India-Pakistan Tensions

Pakistan has denied losing any aircraft in the conflict and has deemed the Indian allegations ‘implausible’ and ‘politically motivated.’ The Pakistani government maintains that it succeeded in shooting down six Indian aircraft.

During these clashes, including one Rafale fighter plane. However, the independent investigation and satellite images have buttressed India's claim that Pakistani aircraft have been destroyed.

The world community is now drawing an alarm on the rise in hostilities between Pakistan and India. While both countries possess nuclear capabilities, the recent exchange of military actions highlights the volatility of the region and the risk of conflict.

Diplomatic channels are focused on easing tensions and furthering dialogue between these two nations.

How Did Operation Sindoor Strengthen India?

Operation Sindoor is another example of the IAF's operational capabilities and India's commitment, under any circumstance, to defend its sovereignty. With an overwhelming display of air power, this operation also helped build India's defense capabilities and conveyed a stern warning to those who foster cross-border terrorism.
