New Lion King film aims to surpass 2019’s box office earnings, competing with Moana 2 for the top spot worldwide

Mufasa: The Lion King, the much-awaited movie by Barry Jenkins, is coming to theaters amid huge expectations. According to preliminary projections, the film could earn over $190 million worldwide during its opening weekend. This prequel-sequel to the original 1994 film, The Lion King, is already making waves with this unique approach and solid reviews, thus making it the most-awaited release this year.

Strong US Debut Expected

Industry analysts believe that the film will go well, particularly at the US box office, where it may collect $47-$52 million in its 3-day weekend. Mufasa: The Lion King may bring in between $130 million and $140 million abroad.

By the end of the weekend, it will have an international total of $177-$192 million. Although these figures are encouraging, they are less than the opening day of the 2019 Lion King, which took in $191.77 million in the US.

Early Reviews Promise Well

Even with a few bad reviews, Mufasa: The Lion King does outplace the initial 2019 film. Now, the 2023 movie boasts a rating of 59% on Rotten Tomatoes, whereas 51% goes to the initial one. Based on this reception and coupled with the very visual beauty and nostalgic character of the movie, both domestic and global ticket sales can see massive upsurges.

Box Office Competitors

Another challenge the movie might face in its revenue is the constant competition at the box office. Moana 2 and many more movies are pulling huge crowds. However, Mufasa: The Lion King looks pretty solid for performing well, especially internationally, where the movie is still a crowd-puller.

Can Mufasa Break the Record

Released on December 20, so much will be seen if this will break as well as its previous counterpart or can achieve success. The coming days have so much to offer, especially whether it will be able to stand up to the heavy projection.
