Shubman Gill Becomes the Second Captain After Sunil Gavaskar to Achieve a Unique Feat

On Friday, the Indian cricket team opener, KL Rahul, scored his first test century in his hometown after nine years while playing against the West Indies at Narendra Modi Stadium. On the other hand, Shubman Gill scored a half-century, becoming the second Indian captain after Sunil Gavaskar to score 50 runs in their debut innings in their hometown.

KL Rahul’s Long-Awaited Test Century on Home Soil

KL Rahul scored 100 runs in 192 balls during the test match against West Indies on day two at the end of session one. The Indian opener hit four boundaries and maintained an average strike rate of 52. He played 26 innings to score the second century in his hometown in test cricket. His first test century on his home soil was against England in 2016, where he scored 199.

Rahul has become the fourth cricketer who had to wait the longest to score a century on their home soil. Ravichandran Ashwin’s wait was the longest, as he had to play 36 innings before the batsman could score his second century in his hometown.

Rahul’s performance in Test cricket this year remained steady with 649 runs in just seven matches. He maintained an average of 54.08 throughout the 13 innings he played. Additionally, the Indian opener smashed three centuries, two fifties, and had a best score of 137. Earlier this year, in a Test series against England, Rahul was the third-highest scorer with 532 runs in 10 innings at an average of 53.2.

Shubman Gill Hits a Landmark Half-Century

In the first Test against West Indies, Shubman Gill scored a half-century in 100 balls in his debut Test innings at his home soil, becoming the second Indian captain after Sunil Gavaskar to achieve this feat. Gill, however, was dismissed as soon as he reached his half-century while attempting a reverse sweep shot. He has been in excellent form and leading Test run-scoreboards in 2025.
