Kangana Ranaut Visits Flood-Affected Mandi, Meets Victims and Offers Relief Supplies
BJP MP Kangana Ranaut inspected flood-affected areas in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, on Monday. Earlier today, she was subjected to severe criticism over her comments on disaster relief efforts.
On her visit, the newly elected MP met condoling families, distributed ration packs, and remained defiant about her earlier assertion that she doesn’t have the executive powers and means at her disposal to undertake relief efforts.
Addressing PTI, Ranaut added, “I had spoken about accountability when the reporters asked when you are reconstructing Himachal. So I said I don’t possess the agencies or the cabinet. This is not my task.”
Visited Victims, Shared Grief, and Assured Support
After visiting the victims, Ranaut posted a step-by-step report on Instagram explaining the scale of destruction and her interaction with the affected families.
She stated, “Today I went to an area of the disaster in Mandi Lok Sabha. Two families lost nine family members in the recent flood tragedy, and five are missing. I met the distraught families during this crisis and empathized with them. May God give the strength to all the people to tolerate this misery. Necessary ration material was distributed among the affected families, and I told the villagers that the development work would be done according to their needs.”
Clarifies Constraints as MP, Indicates No Money or Cabinet Post
The BJP leader stood up for her role, averring that an MP’s task is primarily legislative and does not involve direct management of disasters or authority over relief money.
“Whether it is disaster relief or the disaster itself, I don’t have any official cabinet,” she replied. “I have my two brothers who are always with me. That’s my cabinet. I do not have any funds for disaster relief or hold any Cabinet post. MPs have work that is limited to Parliament. We are very small in the scheme of things.”

Blames Congress for Politicizing Crisis
Her comments were strongly criticized by the Himachal Pradesh Congress government, which labeled them “insensitive” and accused her of ridiculing victims’ misery. Ranaut hit back at the state leadership, saying, “Those who have failed in their duties and disappointed the people of Himachal Pradesh have no right to advise me. The people here are already disillusioned with them. I don’t need lessons from those who have no accountability.”
Counter-attacking allegations about her late visit, she stated, “There are 17 assembly constituencies under me. This is not my official residence. If they (Congress) attempt to cash in on my name, then I am afraid my name will become very popular here.”
Himachal Reels under Monsoon Damage
Meanwhile, the situation in Himachal Pradesh remains grave. Since monsoon hit the state last month, 78 lives have been lost, with 50 killed directly due to rain-induced tragedies like cloudbursts, landslides, and flash floods.
Mandi is one of the worst-hit areas, with more than 30 persons still missing. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also sounded fresh warnings of heavy rain and possible cloudbursts and landslides in the next couple of days.
As relief operations go on, the political battle over response and responsibility has given an additional dimension of complication to the already grim humanitarian crisis in the hill state.
