Drone Hits Rawalpindi Stadium Ahead of PSL Match as Regional Crisis Puts Cricket on the Line
A sudden pause has gripped the biggest cricket tournament in the region. The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 has been suspended indefinitely. This follows mounting military tension between India and Pakistan, forcing cricket to take a backseat to national safety.
Chaos in Dharamsala Forces Sudden Evacuations
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 was suspended indefinitely after India and Pakistan had rising military tensions between the two countries. The suspension is after several cross-border attacks involving drones and missile firings have threatened huge security implications.
The sudden move followed a day of chaos in Dharamsala. Punjab Kings vs Delhi Capitals match was cut short when air raid alarms struck nearby areas such as Jammu and Pathankot. Fans and players were hastily evacuated under strict security. Cheers gave way to fear as alarms rang out beyond stadium walls.
BCCI Acts Quickly Under Safety Concerns
The Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) quickly considered changing venues. But with the increasing threats near the cities where matches were to be held, even this alternative became too risky.
According to Arun Dhumal, chairman of the IPL, the league shall remain suspended till the government gives an all-clear to it. Meanwhile, all players and supporting staff have since been moved out of sensitive locations under very discreet arrangements.
Operation Sindoor Brings Regional Conflict to a New Level
This move came after Operation Sindoor—India’s military response targeting terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir—following the deadly Pahalgam attack on April 22, which left 26 people dead. Pakistan retaliated with drones and missiles, escalating the crisis further. Explosions were reported near Jammu, and the Jammu Civil Airport was hit by a drone strike.
Drone Strike Damages Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium
In a related incident, parts of the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium received damage from a drone strike just hours before a Pakistan Super League (PSL) match between Peshawar Zalmi and Karachi Kings.
The drone crashed near the stadium, damaging a restaurant nearby and injuring two civilians. This compelled the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to postpone the match and consider relocating the remainder of the tournament.
PSL Shifted to UAE as Regional Threat Grows
In a telling sign of the region’s rising danger, the Pakistan Super League (PSL) has also been moved to the UAE. This shift highlights how deep the crisis runs through sport and diplomacy alike.
In view of the growing tensions, the PCB took the decision to shift the remaining matches of PSL to the United Arab Emirates. These matches, initially scheduled to be held at Rawalpindi, Multan, and Lahore, will now be played in Dubai for the security of all players and support staff.
The PCB emphasized the importance of separating politics from sports while prioritizing the safety of all participants.
Remaining IPL Matches and Future Uncertain
Before the suspension, 58 matches of IPL 2025 had been completed. Twelve league games and four playoffs, including the final in Kolkata, were still on the schedule. These matches now stand in uncertainty.
A new window, possibly in August or September, might be explored, but nothing is confirmed. The ongoing conflict has also cast a shadow over India's tour of Bangladesh and the Asia Cup.
Not the First IPL Suspension, But a Different Threat
The IPL has not been suspended just this once. In the year 2021, there had also been a halt for some time as COVID assumed the character of a threat in the construction of the bio-bubble. But this time, the threat is outside the bio-bubble-fistfuls of geopolitics and military actions within.
National Safety Takes Priority Over Cricket
A senior BCCI official summed up the mood, stating, "Cricket cannot go on when the country faces war." National interests have taken center stage, and the safety of players, staff, and fans remains the top concern.
Uncertain Future Leaves Fans Waiting in Silence
With the ongoing standoff not having any end, the cricket enthusiasts wait in silence now. The zeal for IPL has stayed strong, but its comeback will now depend on how this gravely serious conflict unfolds.
