India is set to receive advanced Excalibur artillery munitions and the Javelin anti-tank missile system after the US approved a major Foreign Military Sale. The approval arrives when New Delhi is trying to maintain a balance between trade talks with Washington, dealing with regional security challenges, and maintaining long-standing defence cooperation with Russia. The sale is valued at nearly $93 million and aims to strengthen India’s operational readiness.

Excalibur Artillery to Enhance Precision Capabilities

The Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) confirmed the clearance and informed the US Congress about the proposed transfer. This follows India’s use of Excalibur rounds during Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the Pahalgam terror attack earlier this year.

DSCA noted that the projectiles will improve India’s ability to counter current and emerging threats by boosting first-strike accuracy and battlefield precision.

Comprehensive Package Requested by New Delhi

India has requested 216 M982A1 Excalibur tactical projectiles along with essential non-MDE items such as Portable Electronic Fire Control Systems, primers, propellant charges, and technical support.

According to the DSCA, India will face no difficulties integrating the equipment into its existing systems. The agency emphasised that the sale aligns with the strategic objectives of enhancing defence cooperation between the two nations.

Javelin Missiles to Strengthen Anti-Armour Capabilities

The US also approved India’s request for 100 FGM-148 Javelin rounds, command launch units, training support, and maintenance tools. The DSCA said the sale will support political stability and economic progress across the Indo-Pacific and South Asia. Technical assistance and simulation tools included in the package aim to help Indian forces adapt quickly to the new system.

Broader Context of Strengthening Defence Ties

The signing of a 10-year framework agreement by India and the US to strengthen their defence cooperation. The agreement, which was finalised during the meeting of Rajnath Singh with US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, reinforces both countries’ commitment towards a long-term strategic partnership.

Recent comments by US President Donald Trump on reducing tariff pressures add another layer of diplomatic significance to the growing defence collaboration.

Strategic Upgrade with Regional Implications

The latest India-US defence deal confirms a significant transition towards closer military collaboration. In comparison with previous deals, this package helps to increase the precision and mobility of India’s arsenal at a time of tense regional dynamics
