Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's Struggles Push BCCI to the Brink Over Retirement Decisions

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) finds itself in a precarious situation regarding the future of two of its biggest cricketing stars, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Both players faced disappointing performances in the recently concluded Test series against Australia, sparking widespread speculation about their future in the team. Reports suggest that the BCCI may be in a catch–22 situation; whether to force the veterans to vacate, or to let the matter rest with them.

Defeats in the Latest Australia Series

Perhaps no player was disappointed as much as the two premier Indian batsmen, captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli during the Border-Gavaskar Test series in Australia. However, for the entire series, which comprised five Test matches, Kohli managed just 190 runs at an average of 23.75 in eight innings after scoring a century in the initial Test. His problems against deliveries outside off-stump re-emerged and people both fans and pundits criticised him for that.

On the other hand, Rohit was even more abysmal in the series and could only score 31 runs in three matches before the man decided he would self-demote for the final test in Sydney. The poor performances have fueled debate on the future of the two stars, which has forced many people to remain in the stands.

Retirement Problem Poses Difficult Scenario for BCCI

As reported in the daily Dainik Jagran, due to these deplorable performances the BCCI is feeling awkward in asking these two stalwarts to take retirement. According to the report, the two will not be able to retire voluntarily meaning that the power is now in the hands of the selectors.

A senior BCCI official mentioned, "The officials of the team are also unhappy with the defeat. The team going through a difficult phase of change will now have to do a lot of introspection after returning home. When asked about this, the top BCCI official said I was listening to Gavaskar and Irfan after the match. When asked about Virat and Rohit, he said there are no indications that these two will retire from Tests on their own. BCCI cannot even ask them to retire, but something will have to be done for the team's betterment. Certainly, when the time comes, the selectors will make the right decision."

BCCI Officials’ Conversations Regarding Kohli’s Poor Batting

In BCCI meetings, there have been discussions about Kohli’s continued poor batting performances due to their dismal performances. This is according to the report that has accused the Indian Cricket Team captain and Rajasthan Royals owner Shikhar Dhawan of having it out with Devajit Saikia, who is to succeed Jay Shah as BCCI secretary, and Prabhtej Bhatia, who is vying for the post of treasurer, over Kohli’s poor form. Using this account one of the officials said: “One official said that he has been out like this in the last six innings, while the other corrected him and said that this may have happened eight times.”

Conclusion

During the most recent time, the Indian cricket team has been experiencing transition so BCCI gets into a dilemma while making its senior cricketers’ decision. To some extent, the board is reluctant to go down to the extent of asking Kohli and Rohit to retire but the selectors will have to do the right thing for India’s cricketing future.
