Sunil Gavaskar Predicts Rohit Sharma Might Step Down as India Captain After Australia vs India 2024/25 Tour
Rohit Sharma's future as India's captain has been questioned after the poor show in the current Australia tour. Cricketing legend Sunil Gavaskar boldly said that if Sharma's form does not improve soon, he may step down from his captaincy role by the end of the series.
Rohit Continues to Struggle With the Bat
The 37-year-old has failed with the bat, scoring just 19 runs in three innings in the ongoing series. This comes after a woeful period in the previous home matches against Bangladesh and New Zealand. Rohit has scored just 152 runs in the last 13 innings, with just one fifty and an average of 11.83.
In an interview with ABC Sport, Gavaskar felt that Rohit is a "conscientious cricketer" with "a deep concern for the success of his team." He added that if the skipper fails to deliver himself in the next few matches, he "may well decide to go voluntarily without waiting for the selectors" call.
A Possible Step Down Without Selector Pressure
He added, "Rohit will get opportunities in the next two matches, but he will decide if he doesn't score. He doesn't want to be a burden to the team.
The captain is also not exempt from criticism. For instance, the decision to drop him to No. 6 to accommodate KL Rahul, who is in good form, hasn't improved his batting.
Speculations Rise Over Viral Video
This talk raged while a meme moment happened at the Brisbane Test; Rohit added fuel to the rumors by leaving his gloves in front of the dugout after being dismissed by Pat Cummins. Widespread speculations about his future in this format started then.
Gavaskar's comments reflect growing concerns, and with the upcoming matches in Melbourne and Sydney, all eyes will be on Rohit's performance. If his form does not improve, India might see a new leader taking charge in the near future.
