A 6.0 magnitude earthquake hit Jalalabad, a city in the Nangahar province of Afghanistan. The town is situated on the border of Pakistan and is quite popular for its trade due to its proximity to Pakistan. This earthquake caused widespread destruction in many surrounding villages, resulting in 610 deaths and leaving 1300 people injured.

Impact of Destruction Caused by the Earthquake

The earthquake hit various towns of Kunar, which is near Jalalabad. The US Geological Survey mentioned that the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.0, was centered 27 kilometers east-northwest of Jalalabad, and was 8 kilometers deep.

The Kunar Disaster Management Authority reported that earthquakes with lesser depth cause more destruction than those with greater depth, as seismic waves are closer to the surface of the earth. Shallower earthquakes cause more intense ground-shaking, leading to the collapse of buildings and homes.

Jalalabad has a population of 300,000 people, and its metropolitan area is assumed to be bigger. Most of the buildings and constructions in this city are of low-rise and built with wood and mud bricks. These buildings are not strong enough to withstand earthquakes of this magnitude. The city’s primary source of income comes from agriculture and farming rice and citrus fruits.

Rescue Efforts Underway as International Aid Arrives

The Kunar Disaster Management Authority has said that people were killed and injured in the following districts: Nur Gul, Soki, Watpur, Manogi, and Chapadare. It also said that rescue operations are still being conducted and that many villages have been destroyed.

The United Nations has said that it is “deeply saddened” by the destruction caused by this earthquake and tweeted on “X” that the rescue teams are already on the ground, delivering emergency assistance and lifesaving support.”
