Bay of Bengal Earthquake: Kolkata Residents Feel 5.1 Magnitude Tremors
An earthquake with a 5.1 magnitude struck the Bay of Bengal near Odisha’s Puri on February 25 morning. According to reports, the epicenter of the earthquake was detected in the Bay and Bengal at the parallels 19.52°N and meridians 88.55°E, and a depth of 91 kilometers.
Earthquake Raises Fears of Seismic Activity
While the National Center for Seismology claims that it originated relatively far below the seabed, the tremors were felt near coastal areas. The place is relatively near the coastal areas of Odisha, specifically in Puri. The earthquake’s epicenter has raised distress in the coastal public.
A Long-Term Concern
Historically, the interactions between tectonic plates, specifically the Indian, Eurasian, and Burmese plates, have contributed to frequent underwater earthquakes. These seismic activities can affect the depth of earthquakes and the sedimentary layers in the Bengal region, ultimately influencing the long-term potential for submarine activities. After the tremors were felt, people around Kolkata took it to social media platforms to share their experiences.
People have been advised to stay attentive and keep themselves updated, as it is very crucial to remain aware. Even though no major damage has taken place, the communal efforts of the government highlight the seriousness of the activity, ensuring public safety.
This latest quake comes only two days after a moderate earthquake in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district on Sunday morning.
