OpenAI Expands in India, Offering ChatGPT Go Free for One Year to Boost AI Adoption

OpenAI has officially announced that its ChatGPT Go subscription will be free for one full year in India starting November 4, 2025. The offering aims to make sophisticated AI tools more accessible to millions of Indian users, helping the company strengthen its position in one of its fastest-growing markets.

What The Offer Includes

ChatGPT Go generally costs approximately Rs. 4,788 per year (Rs. 399 per month), but is currently available for free to qualifying users in India. The subscription is based on the GPT-5 model, which offers improved features such as quicker response times, a larger number of messages allowed, and the ability to generate images, upload documents, and enhance memory in conversations.

This scheme is available to both new users and current ChatGPT subscribers in India. The company has noted that iOS users may need to activate the option differently.

OpenAI Expands ChatGPT Reach in India

India is currently OpenAI’s second-largest market in terms of active ChatGPT users after the United States. “OpenAI wants to encourage creative and educational use of AI tools among Indian students, startups, and professionals,” reported Reuters. 

This also comes alongside the launch of its first ‘DevDay Exchange’ event in Bengaluru, showcasing the company’s focus on the Indian developer community.

However, by offering ChatGPT Go Free, it is clear that OpenAI is seeking to expand its user base in the country, foster long-term loyalty, and gain more usage insights from India’s fast-growing AI community.

How to Activate the Free Plan

• Go to the ChatGPT website or open the ChatGPT Android app.
• Log in or create an OpenAI account.
• Go to your account settings and select ‘Upgrade’, and try ChatGPT Go.
• Add a valid payment method, such as a debit card, credit card, or UPI. 
  Note: You will not be charged during the free period, which means existing subscribers will have their next billing date extended. 

According to OpenAI support documentation, a small, refundable verification fee of approximately Rs. 1 is displayed when adding a new payment method.

What This Means to Users

The free one-year ChatGPT Go offer would be a rare opportunity for Indian users, including students, freelancers, educators, and small businesses, to experience the advanced capabilities of GPT-5 without incurring a subscription fee.

On the other hand, premium enterprise features such as API access, team collaboration, and third-party plugins are still reserved for the Plus and Pro tiers; however, this program is likely to help the digital economy of India adopt AI for learning, productivity, and creativity much faster than it would have otherwise.

Users should be aware that after 12 months, billing will automatically continue at Rs. 399 per month unless they cancel it. OpenAI’s action is a clear indication of a strategic initiative to make ChatGPT the most accessible and widely used generative AI tool in India.
