Sam Altman Reveals GPT-5 Details, Rejects Elon Musk’s Buyout Offer
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has officially announced the roadmap for GPT-5, confirming that the flagship AI model will be available for free to all users. The upcoming model, powered by the o3 reasoning model, will integrate OpenAI’s existing technologies and introduce several new features. Additionally, OpenAI is working on enhancing access for Plus and Pro subscribers, offering higher intelligence levels and expanded capabilities.
GPT-5 to Be Free for All Users
Altman shared the announcement in a post on X (formerly Twitter), revealing OpenAI’s plan to offer unlimited access to GPT-5 for free users at the standard intelligence setting. However, the company will introduce certain limitations to prevent abuse. He stated:
"The free tier of ChatGPT will get unlimited chat access to GPT-5 at the standard intelligence setting (!!), subject to abuse thresholds."
Meanwhile, Plus and Pro subscribers will experience GPT-5 at a higher intelligence level, unlocking advanced features and capabilities.
OpenAI to Return to Unified Models
Acknowledging the complexity of recent AI model launches, Altman emphasized OpenAI’s shift toward a unified approach. The company plans to integrate the o3 model with the flagship GPT models, eliminating the need for separate standalone O-models.
Although an exact launch date for GPT-5 has not been disclosed, Altman’s announcement suggests that the release is imminent. The last flagship model, GPT-4, debuted in March 2023, and the delay in GPT-5’s launch has fueled anticipation.
Deep Research AI Agent to Be Available for Free
Deep Research is also the AI-powered research agent from OpenAI, allowing anyone to get an extensive amount of meanings within minutes. The feature first came out for ChatGPT Pro users only, but now the feature itself is going to be available for Plus and free tier users with some limitations.
Altman confirmed:
OpenAI will offer 2 uses per month to the free tier and 10 to the Plus users, with the intent to scale these up over time."
Deep Research was being provided for no cost, he added, but it was estimated to be $1,000 per month.
Elon Musk’s Buyout Offer Is Rejected by Altman
Also, Altman’s comments on Deep Research seem to apply to a recent buyout offer that Elon Musk made. Musk was allegedly first offering $97 billion to buy OpenAI, and Altman was not having it: “No, thank you.” he quoted, declining Musk’s offer.

Conclusion
As OpenAI continues to roll out GPT5, it is seeking to make it more accessible. Offering users the freedom to use the new model free of charge and expanding Deep Research is a major move in access to AI availability. Additionally, intelligence tiers matter when it comes to paid users because premium subscribers still get the benefits and features that they are entitled to.
