Apple Unveils AirPods Max USB-C Upgrade with Lossless Audio & Ultra-Low Latency
In April 2025, Apple will launch a major update that includes enhancements for AirPods Max. This important new feature would be for lossless audio and ultra-low latency audio. These updates are only available exclusively for those using USB-C models as part of the rollout of iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, and macOS Sequoia 15.4.
Enhanced Audio Experience
So, what is this update going to do? This will allow AirPods Max to offer connected "USB-C cable" users 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio, which then gets as close to an original recording as possible in delivering a listening experience. Lossless audio also works with the Personalized Spatial Audio attribute to create a more immersive sound presentation.
Ultra-Low Latency for Gamers and Creators
Essentially, it could be described as ultra-low latency making AirPods Max perfectly suited for gamers and live streamers. According to Apple, such an update would bring latency levels on par with built-in speakers on Macs, iPads, and iPhones. It will allow users to enjoy smooth gameplay as well as perfectly synced audio during live broadcasting.
New USB-C to 3.5mm Audio Cable
Along with the above, Apple will be launching a USB-C to 3.5mm audio cable, which has become a necessity for connecting wired playback. This is going to allow AirPods Max users to connect to a broader array of audio sources like entertainment systems on planes and standard speakers. The cable sells at $39 (U.S.) and is expected to be accessed through Apple's official store and accredited resellers.
Availability and Pricing
The free download of the firmware upgrade will take place sometime in April. Currently, AirPods Max, available only in USB-C, retail for $549 (U.S.) and come in five colors: midnight, starlight, blue, purple, and orange. The update will not apply to models of AirPods Max equipped with Lightning, meaning that lossless audio and low-latency inclusion would be exclusive to USB-C versions.
A Step Forward in Audio Technology
With this update, Apple is enhancing the audio quality and functionality of its premium headphones. Lossless audio and ultra-low latency make AirPods Max a strong choice for both audiophiles and professionals in music production. Apple Music subscribers can take full advantage of the update, with access to over 100 million lossless audio tracks.
