Apple reportedly considered making the iPhone 17 Air its first port-free device, relying entirely on MagSafe wireless charging. The iPhone 17 Air is expected to be Apple’s thinnest iPhone to date, measuring around 5.5mm. To achieve this, Apple may reduce the number of speakers and introduce a single rear camera setup. However, the C1 chip reportedly will not support mmWave, a high-speed 5G band used in some regions.

Industry analysts believe Apple’s decision to keep the USB-C port aligns with European regulations mandating universal wired charging standards. The EU's Common Charger Directive requires smartphone manufacturers to adopt USB-C, making a portless iPhone impractical at this stage.

Apple has gradually transitioned from its proprietary Lightning port to USB-C across various products. If wireless charging technology improves further, the company may eventually phase out charging ports altogether. The iPhone 17 series, inclusive of the Air model, should go into official launch come September 2025.
