Abhishek Sharma's hospitalisation has raised concerns ahead of the India vs Namibia fixture in the T20 World Cup in New Delhi on February 12. The opener missed the team’s first training session at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Tuesday. A PTI report said Abhishek Sharma has been admitted to a private hospital in Delhi with a stomach infection, putting his availability in serious doubt.

BCCI Source Confirms Ongoing Tests

A BCCI source confirmed the situation to PTI, saying, “Abhishek has been admitted to a private hospital in Delhi due to stomach infection. Some tests are being done to ascertain the problem. It is still not clear whether he will be discharged today. But match against Namibia looks doubtful as of now.” Medical updates are expected after further assessments by the team of doctors.

Illness Traced Back to Tournament Opener

Abhishek Sharma had been unwell even before the T20 World Cup opener against the USA last Sunday. The condition worsened after taking the field, leading to his dismissal for a duck. Sanju Samson replaced him as substitute fielder, and the left-hander skipped post-match handshakes. The Times of India reported a high temperature and drips administered at the Wankhede Stadium.

Team Combinations Under Review

Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate said, “Abhi still has a few issues with his tummy. We’re hopeful he’ll be available for the game in two days’ time.” Training in Delhi saw Sanju Samson take early nets, with the wicketkeeper-batter looking short on rhythm and receiving treatment on his left arm. Ishan Kishan remains ahead in the pecking order.

Conclusion: Selection Impact and What Comes Next

Recent T20 World Cup campaigns have shown how last-minute illnesses can disrupt team balance. The Indian team needs to change its batting order because Abhishek Sharma will be unavailable for their match against Namibia. The selection process for the team will depend on the fitness information that will come out after the last Delhi training session.

The medical clearance process now requires more stringent requirements because players need time to recover from their injuries during the upcoming tournament schedule.
