The influence of big data in the digital world is no joke. On average, we generate over 2.5 quintillion bytes of data every day, adding more and more big data to the existing ecosystem. But the trend of the decade is to effectively engage in decoding data and using them effectively for various purposes. Yes, many business organizations are already engaging in utilizing the applications of big data to their fullest by leveraging customer-based solutions. Big data refers to the large complex sets of data that we use to address business problems. Although the data centers came to use in the 1960s and 70s, they hit the stride only in the 2000s when users experienced how social media sites and eCommerce platforms utilized big data. After the sudden blow on the face, every organization starting from big to small embraced the applications of big data to grow their business. Data transferred over the internet comes in different shapes and formats. Big data travels enormous distances over the web. Everything starting from texts in emails and 3D graphics in a virtual reality environment encounters noise through the way and experiences a change of nature. It counters inferences from microwave or Bluetooth devices. Therefore, at the receiving end, companies use decoding algorithms to undo the negative effects of the added noise and retrieve the original big data. Since big data came into existence in the 1950s, people also started using decoding algorithms. Over the past seven decades, many useful decoding algorithms have been unleashed in the world of big data.

Decoding Data

Decoding data is the process of unlocking the content of a coded file or a disturbing file that has been transmitted. Media files like pictures, videos, documents, audios, etc are normally decoded using decoding algorithms to rectify the additional impacts on the original content. Decoding data is very important in a business ecosystem because it is often followed by a set of other actions that help organizations perform better. 

GRAND-Powered Silicon Chip to Retrieve Original Data

Researchers at MIT, Boston University, and Maynooth University in Ireland have jointly worked to create the first silicon chip that has the capability to decode complex data, regardless of its structure, accuracy. The chip uses a universal decoding algorithm called Guessing Random Additive Noise Decoding (GRAND) to eliminate the additional noise. 

Whenever data is shared over the internet, they are affected by external forces like noise or energy that disturbs the original content. After it reaches the destination, a decoding algorithm tries to retrieve the coded data without any damage. On the other hand, instead of decoding directly, GRAND focuses more on finding what has affected the file and deduces the original information. The system recognizes the noise sequences and subtracts them from the data to check if it provides the original data present in the codebook.
