Manjummel Boys Director Chidambaram Granted Pre-Arrest Bail by Kerala Court
The Ernakulam Sessions Court has granted anticipatory bail to Chidambaram S. Poduval, the acclaimed director of the blockbuster film Manjummel Boys, following a sexual assault complaint filed last month. The case stems from a 2022 incident where a young actress alleged the filmmaker behaved inappropriately during a film project discussion.
The court gave him legal protection as the incident was reported four years later. The judge also said the woman who complained was not helping the police with their investigation.
A Four-Year Silence: The Core Facts of the Case
The legal trouble comes from an incident in May 2022 that took place at an apartment in Kochi. An actress, who had a small role in Manjummel Boys, accused Chidambaram of entering her room and behaving badly. However, the police did not record the official complaint until 28 February 2026. This long delay was a big part of Chidambaram’s defense. His lawyers said the timing was a plan to hurt his name after his movie became a big success.
The court’s decision was heavily influenced by the complainant's current status and the ongoing investigation. As reported by Live Law: "The investigating officer reported that she is not cooperating with the investigation. Considering all the above said aspects, I am of the view that this is a fit case to invoke the jurisdiction vested u/s.482 of BNSS to grant anticipatory bail to the petitioner."
How Will This Impact Future Mollywood Projects and Safety?
The bail helps Chidambaram with his new movie called Balan. However, the case shows a big change in the Malayalam film industry. A group called the Hema Committee recently shared a report about harassment in movies. Many people are now speaking up about past events. This makes things difficult for film producers and local businesses.
Getting bail does not mean Chidambaram is innocent; it just shows how courts are trying to be fair to everyone. Mollywood needs to move beyond courtroom battles and focus on creating transparent and safe working environments that help prevent such allegations in the first place.
