OpenAI’s Ghibli AI Art Policy Sparks Debate Among Digital Artists

A viral AI-generated replica of "Spirited Away" has recently been banned, but this does not necessarily mean its removal was due to an injunction from OpenAI. As artists flood various platforms with Ghibli-inspired creations, an alleged crackdown is underway; however, the situation is more complex than simply being an uncovered ban.

OpenAI seems to inspire a dreamy imagination derived from Studio Ghibli's whimsical forests, floating castles, and soft watercolor skies. Rumors suggest that if OpenAI takes a serious stance on this issue, it could lead to more drastic measures. But is this speculation based on fact or fiction?

Currently, debates about AI-created Ghibli art are circulating among digital artists and technology enthusiasts. It is worthwhile to explore OpenAI's policies, the ethical implications of AI-generated art, and the extent to which we can legally use these captivating animation designs.

What's the Ghibli AI Art Controversy

Studio Ghibli's  enchanting style and aesthetic are easily recognized for their dreamlike, hand-painted textures and otherworldly storytelling. Some people argue that images created by AI models like DALL-E or Midjourney resemble copyrighted material. However, OpenAI considers the output to be partially constrained by its content policy, which asserts that generated art cannot infringe on copyright or closely imitate protected forms.

The sudden emergence of AI-generated art mimicking Ghibli's style has raised important  legal  and ethical questions. Although OpenAI has developed filters to detect overly derivative outputs, it has not outright prohibited the use of Ghibli-related prompts on its platform. This situation arises amid a broader industry effort to restrict AI from reproducing copyrighted material without sufficient alteration.

An Open AI Content Policy: What Are the Provisions

OpenAI prioritizes originality and legality in its guidelines. Moreover, these are the key points:

  1. Doesn’t Carry any Copyright Infringement: AI art should never be a direct copy of a protected character or scene.

  2. Ethical Use: The result of artificial intelligence should not produce harmful, false, or misleading content.

  3. Style vs. Replication: Replicating specific Ghibli frames is essential, but general style restrictions, such as "watercolor anime," are acceptable. While "a forest in Ghibli style" is a valid input, a "Howl's Moving Castle clone" may not be.

Why AI Struggles With Ghibli’s Magic

The spread of misinformation within the AI community is often subtle. Some users believe that automated filters result in complete bans, while others view OpenAI's regulations as similar to those of third-party platforms like DeviantArt, which have stricter regulations. Additionally, the automatic enforcement of disallowed actions by AI tools contributes to this frustration.

Five Limitations of AI-Created Ghibli Art

  1. The Legal Gray Zone: While AI-generated artwork mildly stands on the side of legality, Ghibli-like artwork is somewhat open to copyright issues.

  2. Technical Constraint: Current AI algorithms find it extremely difficult to mimic Ghibli hand-sketching; either create artifacts like overs-smoothed surfaces and incoherent lighting or, as in a March 2024 Midjourney output, compare the AI-generated and actual Ghibli skies.

  3. Ethical Concerns: The artists claim that AI robs the creativity and effort of an artist.

  4. Platform Bans: Some communities ban AI content altogether.

  5. Too Much Filtering: The filter from OpenAI blocks even harmless prompts.

The Future Of AI And Anime Art

AI exists in a complex relationship with creativity, particularly when it comes to traditional forms of art. It does not prohibit the creation of imaginative or fantastical pieces; in fact, OpenAI encourages art that captures the transformative essence often found in Studio Ghibli films. However, using tools like Stable Diffusion to create Ghibli-inspired art presents three key challenges:

  1. The content filters  from OpenAI are still evolving.

  2. There are concerns about potential copyright infringement.

  3. Different platforms have specific prohibitions regarding AI-generated content.

As a result, the regulatory environment surrounding AI and art needs to be regularly updated, as seen with the policy changes on DeviantArt.
