War 2 Trailer Sparks Fan Backlash Over ‘Plastic’ VFX Despite Star Power

The much-anticipated War 2, the next project in Yash Raj Films' (YRF) Spy Universe, has taken the internet by storm. Even though Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR, and Kiara Advani deliver brilliant performances, fans are mercilessly trolling the film's visual effects (VFX) on social media.

Everything from "cheap plastic" backgrounds to outrageously fake action sequences has fans questioning whether YRF indeed skimped on post-production work, despite the film's huge Rs. 300 crore budget.

Speedboat on an F1 Track?: Fans Rip Apart Ridiculous CGI Choice

One moment that has gone completely viral for the wrong reasons is a speedboat racing on what seems to be a Formula 1 track. Netizens have roasted the moment, with one Twitter user saying, "Only YRF can go from boat to car in the same scene." Next, they will turn a bike into a fighter jet!. Another person criticized the VFX and said it looked like PS2-era graphics, while other fans wondered if the studio was forced to rush the effects to make the release date of August 14th.

Even Jr. NTR's eight-pack abs, which were designed to be realistic, sparked debate. Some fans praise his dedication to fitness, while others accuse YRF of using too much CGI, and one user criticized that they made the worst VFX ever.

Despite the trolling and reactions, the trailer continues to trend on social media. One user posted on X ( Twitter) - ( source: bollywoodlife.com)

Continual Comparisons to Previous YRF Hits Reveal  Downgrade

At an early point, fans compared War 2’s visuals to YRF’s previous Spy Universe films like War (2019) and Pathaan. Fans complained that the visuals were not as smooth or immersive. The side-by-side breakdowns revealed major flaws:

  • Artificial Explosions: In War 2, the fire and smoke effects lack heat distortion, making explosions look like a video game cutscene.
  • Green Screen Glitches: Great scenes for a neon-laden chase scene had very poor blending and effects, with the Bollywood actors themselves appearing "pasted" on backgrounds.
  • Underwater Flop: The way the particles acted in some of the water scenes was called "overpowered neon messes."

Some YRF industry insiders suggested that YRF’s own in-house VFX department, VFX, might have taken on too many projects, and with all the buzz that followed, there was also a thought that Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment ( the same VFX department that worked on the films Jawan and Animal) might have swooped in for the final moments of fixes.

Will VFX Problems Ruin War 2’s Box Office Future?

Despite the backlash, War 2 stars’ power still has a chance of saving its potential. Hrithik's screen charisma, Jr. NTR's debut in Bollywood, and sheer hype around the War 2 trailer (which received millions of views in hours) might save the film, but if the completed film has the same unrefined effects as the trailer, social media fame could derail the Rs. 500 crore global target.

The bigger issue is that Bollywood is in a VFX crisis. War 2 is not a standalone problem. Several recent Hindi-language big-budget films, such as Tiger 3 and Brahmāstra, also faced VFX backlash. Patricia was surprised in our interview and said Indian big-budget film filmmaking is still behind because of past VFX decisions. The Spectacle Awaits: But Can War 2 Survive the Editing Room?

War 2 has the stars, stunts, and scope to be a giant box-office success. This War 2 is set to be a great celebration, featuring star power, large-scale stunts, and a great story that is about to pop at the box office. However, even though it will shine, the film that shines even brighter than its predecessor can still flop if it does not adequately produce the final polish in post-production.
