Tesla’s Gigafactory in Texas is near to Colorado River, with around two miles of exposure.
Tesla opened its next Gigafactory in Texas recently for manufacturing electric Cybertruck. It is considered a crucial step in the company's plan to expand its manufacturing capability in sustainable vehicles. To commemorate the event, Tesla held an event, named “Cyber Rodeo”, which had around 15,000 people attend the party amply pepped to the level of a rave party with live music. “We are entering a new phase of Tesla’s future. I can’t wait to see this baby in production, it’s going to be epic”, said Elon Musk clad in a black cowboy hat and aviator sunglasses. He said he was excited to begin working on production after a long delay.
At the opening ceremony, Tesla CEO Elon Musk also inaugurated the Roadster vehicle, which is scheduled to begin production next year. Though he didn't elaborate on the details, he said it would look like a vehicle from the future. It is Tesla's fourth company in the US and also has a factory outside Shanghai, China. It has recently opened its first European factory near Berling, Germany. Musk also owns SpaceX, a space travel company based in Texas.
The Texas Gigafactory is located on around 2,100 acres of land, near to Colorado River, with around two miles of exposure. It said it will hire up to 5,000 including entry-level workers. According to a report published in Reuters, the Texas Government has heaped tax breaks and incentives worth millions of dollars. Though the tech geeks are excited about these developments, Tesla is facing some serious allegations by the local people. Environment conservationists have sought to block the celebration itself citing traffic congestion, and water and air pollution.
Tesla’s woes don’t end here. It is heaped with criticism over its labor practices and workplace safety, particularly in the Fremont factory. It was sued by a civil rights agency for racial discrimination. Local people at the Austin factory are baffled at the hypocrisy in the plant getting clean public water while their private water supply is dirty. They are also concerned about the catastrophic effect the Colorado River could create if the river overflows its banks. With its factories set up in low-income, minority-dominated surroundings, Tesla is not taking the steps that reflect the claims it makes for its sustainable vehicles.
