[13th July 2023] Tesla Inc. is in discussions with the Indian government to establish a car factory in India. The proposed factory would have an annual capacity of up to 500,000 electric vehicles, with prices starting from 2 million rupees ($24,400.66).
As part of its plans, Tesla aims to utilize India as an export base, targeting countries in the Indo-Pacific region for car shipments, as reported by government sources. This move signifies a strategic shift in Tesla's approach to entering the Indian market.
While talks between Tesla and the Indian government faced challenges in the past, the recent discussions reflect a change in stance. Tesla has engaged with officials to explore incentives provided by the government for car and battery manufacturing. Additionally, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi encouraged Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, to make a significant investment in the country during their meeting last month.
India presents significant potential for a sustainable energy future, including solar power, stationary battery packs, and electric vehicles. Elon Musk also expressed his interest in bringing SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet service to India.
