Switching to solar energy is an exciting step toward energy independence, but it’s important to know the process doesn’t happen overnight. Many homeowners are unsure what to expect after signing up for solar, which can create a hesitation to start the process altogether. To help keep you informed, Spartan Solar has created this guide that outlines the key players, steps, and timelines involved in transitioning your home to solar power.

Identify the Key Players in Your Solar Journey

Several entities work together to ensure a smooth solar installation and activation process. Understanding their roles can help clarify what to expect at each stage:

Installer

Your installation company handles the design, delivery, and installation of the system. They also manage the necessary paperwork, including permits and interconnection agreements.

Financier

If you’re financing the system rather than purchasing it outright, a financier—typically a bank—will be involved. Once your solar panels are active, you’ll pay the financier instead of your utility company for energy costs.

Utility Company

Your local utility company grants Permission to Operate (PTO), allowing your system to connect to the grid.

Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ)

This is your local city or county government body responsible for approving permits and conducting inspections to ensure the system meets safety codes and regulations.

Each of these parties plays a vital role in moving your solar project forward, ensuring the process is done correctly and safely.

The Solar Installation Timeline

While specific timelines can vary based on location, installer, and other factors, the process of going solar generally follows these simple steps:

Step 1: Assessment (1–7 days)

A site assessment is conducted to evaluate your property’s suitability for solar. This includes identifying the proper system for your home and confirming its technical feasibility.
Occasionally, a second survey by engineers is required for further evaluation. During this stage, financing approvals (if applicable) are completed as well.

Step 2: Design and Engineering (3–15 days)

The installation company’s engineers create a custom design tailored to your home. This system design is prepared for submission to the permitting authorities.

Step 3: Permitting (3–120 days)

Permits are requested from the local AHJ. The time required for approval can vary significantly depending on your location and the efficiency of your local government.

Step 4: Installation (1–3 days)

Once permits are approved, the solar system is installed on the property. Inclement weather day-of or additional work, such as upgrading an electrical panel, may extend this step’s duration.

Step 5: Inspection (1–30 days)

After installation, the local AHJ inspects the system to ensure it complies with all codes and regulations.

Step 6: Interconnection (30–90 days)

Following AHJ approval, your utility company is contacted to grant Permission to Operate (PTO). This step includes signing interconnection agreements and waiting for the utility company to finalize their review—a process that can take time.

Step 7: Completion (1–7 days)

Once PTO is granted, your system is activated, and you’re officially generating your own energy. At this stage, you’ll likely receive instructions for monitoring your system, typically via a mobile app.

Note: Timeline estimates vary by location and installer. Confirm specific timelines with your provider!

Congratulations, you’re solar powered! Once your system is activated, you can enjoy the benefits of generating clean, renewable energy while reducing your utility costs.
