Tech giant Microsoft unveils Windows 11 update and adds AI-powered Bing to launch chats

Microsoft Corp. began adding its recently upgraded Bing search engine to its Windows computer software to put artificial intelligence (AI) at the fingertips of hundreds of millions of people. Microsoft announced Windows 11 update add AI-powered Bing by drawing on the artificial Intelligence capabilities of startup OpenAI.

The Windows 11 update, the latest in a series of product updates this month from Microsoft, demonstrates how the Redmond, Washington-based software company is pushing ahead with the AI technology of OpenAI, despite recent criticism of its technology. Although this AI-powered Bing is not widely used, Windows accounts for 9% of Microsoft’s revenue. It is the world’s leading operating system, with an estimated 82% market share in 2021. Including a link to the refreshed Bing alongside the familiar Start button is a significant step forward for technology that has occasionally proven to be inaccurate or offensive.

Microsoft is releasing a major update to Windows 11, which includes the addition of the company’s new AI-powered Bing search to the taskbar. Along with a slew of new features, the new Windows 11 update will provide quick access to the new Bing chat feature. Improvements to widgets, a better touch mode, a screen recording feature, tabs inside Notepad, and other features are also included in Windows 11. The new Bing Integration is a surprise that Microsoft has not tested with its Windows Insiders. A new Bing icon will appear in the taskbar search box, with Microsoft emphasizing the new chat answers experience in the search flyout. While chat answers will not be available directly from the search flyout, Windows 11 users will be able to start a Bing chat in Edge from here if they have access to the Bing preview. Microsoft has been gathering feedback on the new Bing before releasing it to the public. The engine’s AI chatbot allegedly professed love or threatened some testers, prompting the company to limit long chats that it claimed “provoked” responses it did not intend. In addition to the new Bing, Microsoft’s Windows update will include software that can connect to iPhone messages and calls, beginning with a small group of users. Bing chat’s expansion to the Windows 11 taskbar comes just a week after Microsoft introduced the same mode to Bing on mobile and in Skype conversations. Microsoft is also preparing to demonstrate its ChatGPT-like AI in Office apps soon.
