Share Market Today: Sensex Plunges 1.30%, Nifty Falls 1.35% to 23,680 Amid HMPV Virus Concerns

The Indian Stock Market indices Sensex and Nifty have been trading in red with a fall of more than 1030 and 300 points respectively indicating significant losses in the heavyweight stocks.

The Sensex closed at 79223.11 last session and is currently at an LTP of 78,182.33 while the NIFTY 50 closed on 24004.75 and is trading at 23680 right now. Both showing a significant dip in their value from its closing price.

More than 300 stocks have hit their lower circuit limits for the day in the Nifty and Sensex. This widespread selling-off of shares was due to the fears of two positive HMPV cases in India. This disease has no vaccine and is rising in China with concerns of a potential outbreak. The India VIX or fear gauge has also increased by 11% indicating nervousness in the minds of investors. This uncertainty over the HMPV virus has impacted the Indian economy as well as the stock market leading to a sharp decline.

The stock market has also faced serious pressure as Foreign Investors (FPIs) have been selling off heavily with net outflows of Rs 4285 crore in January. The sentiments of the investors have been put down by nervousness in the upcoming earning season. Along with that, the global market has also been adding to it with the dollar getting stronger and crude oil prices making their highest record since October 2024.

The ITC Limited shares were trading at Rs 452 as the company stock went “ex-date” for the demerger of its hotel business. The ITC’s shareholders who had the stock before this date were entitled to get shares of the new hotel business and as a result the price of the stock dropped by Rs 27 from its previous closing. The analysis had expected a decrease between Rs 16 to Rs 25, so that larger expected drop brought a surprise and this adjustment in the stock price combined with other factors have contributed to the overall decline in both the major indices.

Admits the losses, some firms have made significant profits. Let's check out the share market live updates in detail to have better clarity on the stocks that have added to the modest gains to their stock value.
