Bangladesh Could Return to T20 World Cup 2026 if Pakistan Withdraws from Tournament

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has postponed its final decision on participation in the T20 World Cup 2026. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi met Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Monday to discuss the situation, tweeting that “the final decision will be taken either on Friday or next Monday.” The uncertainty follows Bangladesh’s refusal to play in India, which led the ICC to replace them with Scotland in Group C on January 24.

Bangladesh Could Return if Pakistan Withdraws

An official familiar with the matter told HT that if Pakistan decides to withdraw, Bangladesh may be reinstated in Group A and play matches in Sri Lanka as originally requested by the BCB. “This arrangement would pose limited logistical challenges,” the source said. ICC sees this as a procedural response to Pakistan’s exit rather than acquiescing to Bangladesh’s security concerns.

Possible Boycott or Alternative Options for Pakistan

Reports suggest the PCB is weighing options, including boycotting the February 15 match against India in Colombo, which would mean forfeiting points. The official explained, “By not playing, they would be violating a deal they themselves had worked for.”

Another potential option is playing matches while wearing black armbands. These moves could affect tournament sponsors and broadcasters if not carefully handled.

BCCI Responds to Ongoing Situation

Rajiv Shukla, BCCI vice president, said, “We wanted Bangladesh to play and we also assured full security, but since they have made this decision, it is very difficult to change the entire schedule at the last moment. This is why Scotland was brought in.”

He added, “Pakistan is intervening in the matter without any reason and provoking Bangladesh. Everyone knows the brutality done by Pakistan on the Bangladeshis, and now they are trying to mislead them, which is completely wrong.”
