Seven-time Grand Slam Champion, Djokovic, Defeats Zachary Svajda, Ties Federer's Record
The seven-time Grand Slam Champion, Novak Djokovic, firmly believes in his skill and strength as he reaches the third round of the US Open at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. On Wednesday, Novak faced an American Qualifier, Zachary Svajda, and struggled to set his footing during the first set. However, the champion made a comeback.
Novak Djokovic Struggles in the First Set
Djokovic was seen giving his worst performance during the first set of the tournament since 2014. The thirty-eight-year-old champion looked exhausted in the opening games and committed 14 errors. It looked as if Djokovic was about to lose to Zachary.
The American Qualifier masterfully used a backhand down the line, leading to a tiebreak, hooking the audience to the game and leaving them unsure of what might happen next.
Celebrating his win, Djokovic said, “It's really about trying to make the most out of that day and win a tennis match, find a way to win.”
When asked about his thoughts on his poor performance in the first set, he replied, “So that's what I've done today. I mean, I'm not pleased with my level of tennis, but you have days like this where you're not playing at your best, but you just kind of find a way.”
What Caused the Victory of Novak Djokovic?
Novak Djokovic started regaining his form as Svajda suffered physically and seemed exhausted. The twenty-two-year-old American Qualifier’s serving speed reduced to 90mph in the second set compared to his initial 120mph in the first. He also suffered from leg cramps, which took a toll on his performance.
Despite several visits from physiotherapists, Zachary Svajda's condition did not improve, and his lower body did not support the fast movements he made in the first set. This presented Novak Djokovic with an opportunity to win.
Novak Djokovic holds the record for winning 24 Grand Slam Singles titles and 10 Australian Open titles. He is also an Olympic gold medalist. When he faced Zachary Svajda in the US Open, the champion performed badly, making 14 errors and giving the lead to the American Qualifier during the first set. However, he regained his form during the remaining sets and came out victorious.
