India Asia Cup 2025 Squad

Shubman Gill Announced as the Vice Captain, While Iyer and Jaiswal Omitted from the Asia Cup 2025 India Squad

BCCI recently put an end to ongoing speculations around the Indian squad for the Asia Cup 2025 by naming Suryakumar Yadav as the Captain and Shubman Gill as the Vice captain. Shubman was not a part of India’s last three Twenty20 International (T20Is) against Bangladesh, England, and South Africa. However, he made a comeback and secured a spot in the Asia Cup 2025 squad.

It was a tough decision to make as Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, in the absence of Gill, performed remarkably well, scoring a few centuries to secure their spots in the Asia Cup India Squad. However, the selectors finally decided to bet on Gill’s quality and technical abilities.

India Asia Cup 2025 Squad Misses Yashasvi Jaiswal & Shreyas Iyer

Unfortunately, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer have no place in the Asia Cup 2025 squad despite Iyer's astounding performance in the IPL for Punjab. The selectors have put Jaiswal on the standby list for now, along with players like Dhruv Jurel, Riyan Parag, Prasidh Krishna, and Washington Sundar.

Jasprit Bumrah has confirmed his availability and will be part of the Asia Cup 2025 India squad, along with Arshadeep Singh, who has excellent left-arm pace and is known to perform well in death overs.

Will Sanju Samson be a Part of India’s Asia Cup 2025 Squad?

Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma performed well during the last several months when Gill was absent. But as Gill is now part of the main Asia Cup India Squad, it is unlikely that Samson and Sharma will bat together again.

This makes it uncertain for Samson to bat at XI, as his record of performing well in the middle order is not highly appreciated. Jitesh Sharma, however, could take this position.

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar also said, “Sanju Samson was opening the innings because Gill and Jaiswal were not playing, and Abhishek, with the way he performed, it was hard to look beyond him.”

The selectors also decided to keep Tilak Varma, who has performed well in T20Is. He scored repeated centuries while facing South Africa last year and in a five-match series against England.

To sum up, BCCI has finally announced Shubman Gill as the vice-captain and omitted Shreyas Iyer. Yashaswi Jaiswal will be on the standby list along with four other players. Sanju Samson will unlikely remain in the Asia Cup 2025 India squad.
