Priyanka Chopra compares Bollywood and Hollywood's work cultures, highlighting the power of Indian 'Jugaad' and organic creativity

The globally renowned actress, Priyanka Chopra, has compared the two major film industries- Bollywood and Hollywood. Speaking to Forbes India, she said that the two film industries are pretty different as they reflect their respective countries' cultures and ways of working. Chopra, who is now based in the US returned to Mumbai last week for the launch of her new brand, Max Factor.

In the interview with Forbes India, Chopra pointed out the significant differences she has observed since transitioning to Hollywood. “I think every country in general is different. We all have our own cultural things that we like and how we work,” she explained. She elaborated on the structured nature of Hollywood, saying, “Hollywood has so much paperwork. 100 emails that will come to you before the next day. Timings are very specific… it depends on what time you wrapped the night before. There’s no room to play unless you are working with a filmmaker like that. It is really tight and very organized.”

On the other hand, Chopra highlighted the flexible and adaptable nature of Bollywood. She said, “We have a lot more 'jugaad' and get stuff done. We are like a little romantic about it like 'Arey ho jayega, kar lenge.” Priyanka Chopra emphasised how this attitude embodies the creative and organic nature of filmmaking in India and said, “That's the big difference I have seen otherwise filmmaking around the world speaks the same language.”

Even as her life is now soaked in Hollywood glamour, Priyanka playfully confessed to missing a few things about Bollywood filmmaking-the slow-motion dance sequences and lip-syncing, especially. She particularly relished the opportunity to sing Bollywood songs at the wedding of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant in Mumbai earlier this year.

Meanwhile, Chopra continues to make waves in the American film industry. She has recently been seen in ‘Love Again’, which is a romantic comedy. Up in the future are ‘Heads of State’, which will see her with Idris Elba and John Cena; and ‘The Bluff’, in which she will be playing a female pirate from the Caribbean in the 19th century. However, Hollywood commitments do not mean that Chopra is distanced from her Bollywood roots: She continues to balance both franchises.
