Nokia's CEO is revolutionizing communication, having unveiled the world’s first ‘immersive’ phone calls
Officials said most smartphones have at least two microphones, so the technology can be used in real-time to place a call with location characteristics.
The company said Monday that Nokia CEO Pekka Lundmark made phone calls using “immersive audio and video,” a new technology that improves call quality with three-dimensional sound, never interrupting connections there is a large.
“We demonstrated the future of voice calls,” said Lundmark, who was also in the room in 1991 for the first 2G calls.
Current smartphone calls are monophonic, which bumps audio features together and makes them sound flat and shallow. Still, new technology will bring 3D audio where the caller will hear everything as if they were with the other person.
“This is the biggest advancement in voice personalization since the introduction of single-note telephone audio in smartphones and PCs today,” said Jenny Lukander, president of Nokia Technologies.
“Now this is standardized, so network providers, chipset manufacturers, handset manufacturers can start using it in their products,” Lukander said in the interview
Nokia made the call with a typical smartphone running on a public 5G network.
Jyri Huopaniemi, head of audio research at Nokia Technologies, said that besides person-to-person conversational calls, it can be used in conference calls where participants’ voices can be reduced based on their location from others.
Officials said most smartphones have at least two microphones, which allow them to use this technology in real-time by sending a call with location characteristics.
The technology is part of the upcoming 5G Advanced standard, and Nokia aims to secure licensing rights for a technology that will likely take years to become widely available.
Conclusion: Nokia's unveiling of the world’s first immersive phone call marks a breakthrough in communications technology. By harnessing the power of VR and AR, Nokia is transforming how we communicate and share experiences.
