NIT-T and Illinois Tech announce data Science partnership

The National Institute of Technology - Tiruchi (NIT-T) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Illinois Institute of Technology. They came up with the decision to launch a degree program in Data Science and AI which are likely to start in Fall 2024.

The agreement, signed at NIT-T, aims to address the growing demand for data science professionals, with the U.S. Bureau of Labour projecting a 36% job growth rate for data scientists by 2031.

The collaboration implies on-ground cohort-based learning opportunities, which are specifically tailored for lifelong learners in India, those seeking career changes or professional growth while remaining employed. This is considered a flexible option where people can pursue higher education without disrupting their current employment.

In this partnership, National Institute of Technology - Tiruchi and Illinois Institute of Technology will work together to create academic programs, jointly teach courses, supervise students together, collaborate on research projects, and facilitate the movement of both faculty and students between the two institutions.

The introduction of an online Joint Master’s degree program in data science for working professionals in both countries has been seen as groundbreaking, according to Akhlesh Lakhtakia, Chair of the U.S.-India Higher Education Partnerships Committee, which promotes academic cooperation between the two nations.

The collaboration is expected to open new opportunities for students and faculty and facilitate the internationalization of curriculum and research initiatives. Ms. Aghila, the director of NIT-T, views the partnership with Illinois Tech as a significant step toward promoting academic and collaborative research activities between the two institutions.

The signing ceremony witnessed the presence of key officials, including G. Aghila, director of NIT-T, Kenneth T. Christensen, provost of Illinois Tech, and Mallik Sundharam, vice-president for enrollment management and student affairs at Illinois Tech, among others. Principal Commercial Officer Carey Arun from the U.S. Consulate and Mr. Christensen also contributed to the event.
