Trump’s Senior Counsellor for Trade & Manufacturing Warns India Against Buying Russian Oil, Says ‘It won’t end well’
On Monday, while speaking about the recent imposition of heavy tariffs on India, the senior counsellor of trade and manufacturing for US President Donald Trump, Peter Navarro, said that India must “come around” to trade talks with the US and that failing to do so might result in severe consequences for India.
What Did Peter Navarro Say About India?
Speaking to the press at Real America’s Voice, he mocked New Delhi, saying “Maharaja of tariffs.” He also warned that it would “not end well” for India due to its growing ties with Russia. He specifically seemed concerned about India’s purchase of crude oil from Russia at cheap prices and funding the war in Ukraine.
He said about the heavy duties imposed on India, “They have the highest tariffs in any major country in the world against the United States. We got to deal with that.” Furthermore, he pointed out that India used to purchase very little oil from Russia before the war started in Ukraine, but it is now buying large amounts of oil at discounted prices and “profiting” from this trade.
Navarro also praised Asian countries like the Philippines, Japan, South Korea, and Indonesia, saying they have moved closer to Washington, D.C., through the new trade agreements, expecting India to do the same. He said “India must come around at some point,” and warned that “if it doesn’t, it’s laying down with Russia and China, and that won’t end well for India.”
Navarro Lashes Out at BRICS at a Different Interaction
At a different television talk, Peter Navarro lashed out at BRICS. He said that the economic models of the countries that were part of this organization depended mainly on the US markets.
''When they sell to the US, their exports are like vampires sucking our blood dry with their unfair trade practices,” he said. Adding further, the White House trade advisor noted that BRICS countries have hated each other and killed each other. He pointed out this historical fact as to why their current alliance would not survive without the US trade.
To sum up, Peter Navarro has been condemning India for quite some time now due to its ties with Russia and indirectly funding the war in Ukraine by purchasing Russian crude oil. Apart from India, he has also criticized the alliance formed by BRICS, saying that it won’t last without US trade support.
